Patagonia has long been the poster child for a more conscious form of capitalism, driven by their passionate crusade to protect and preserve the environment. In 2011, the highly successful and profitable adventure wear retailer made a surprising plea to their customers – buy less of our stuff!
Their Common Threads initiative is refreshing contrast to the buy, buy, buy mantra of their more traditional counterparts, encouraging their customers to Reduce, Repair, Reuse, Recycle and Reimagine. So far this year, Patagonia has helped customers repair 13,649 items, ‘re-home’ 349 pieces and recycle 83,629 pounds of worn out Patagonia clothing. It’s a wonderful example of leadership from a truly exceptional company.
