Wikipedia raised a staggering $16m in donations in just 50 days, from over 500,000 donors worldwide . And what innovative, super high-tech, ground-breaking marketing technique did they use? A simple but highly effective banner ad featuring a personal appeal from Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales.
“Wikipedia isn’t anything like a commercial website,” he says in the appeal. “It is a community creation, written by volunteers making one entry at a time. You are part of our community. And I’m writing today to ask you to protect and sustain Wikipedia.” Read more here:
